UV through car glass: the part parents don't hear

All windshields sold in the U.S. are laminated — two glass layers around a plastic interlayer — and that interlayer happens to be an excellent UVA filter. Side and rear windows are usually single-pane tempered glass, which blocks UVB well but lets a large share of UVA through.

The most-cited measurement is a 2016 study in JAMA Ophthalmology (Boxer Wachler), which tested 29 cars: windshields blocked on average 96% of UVA; side windows only 71%, with some as low as 44%. UVA is the wavelength band associated with skin aging, some skin cancers, and cataract risk — and it's precisely the band your rear side windows are weakest against.

Now note where the car seat is: rear row, directly beside a side window. On a long drive, that's chronic low-grade UVA exposure on infant skin — skin the American Academy of Pediatrics says should be kept out of direct sun entirely for the first 6 months (with only minimal sunscreen use on small areas before 6 months, per AAP guidance).

The pattern: prefer things that are part of the window over things that hang near the child. In a 30mph collision, everything not attached to the car keeps moving at 30mph.

Heat: the faster threat

UV damage is cumulative; heat injury is same-day. The NHTSA numbers every parent should know:

A parked car's interior climbs about 20°F in the first 10 minutes, ~40°F within an hour — cracked windows barely change the curve. Children's core temperature rises 3–5× faster than adults'. Roughly 37 U.S. children die in hot cars in an average year, and in over half of those cases a caregiver simply forgot the child was there.

Two habits, one product note. Habits: keep a needed item (phone, left shoe) in the back seat so opening the rear door is automatic; lock the parked car so kids can't climb in to play. Product note: a reflective windshield shade meaningfully lowers dashboard and cabin peak temperatures while parked — which protects the child during the first minutes of the drive (buckles and dark seat surfaces hot enough to burn skin are a documented ER complaint) — but it changes nothing about the never-leave-them rule. Nothing does.

The practical checklist

  • ☐ Rear side windows: fitted or frame-mounted shades on the seat side — nothing rigid, no suction cups near the child

FAQ

Does my baby need sunscreen inside the car?

For a short errand, no. For a multi-hour daytime drive with sun on their side of the car — yes on exposed skin (6 months+), because tempered side glass passes a significant share of UVA. Under 6 months, the AAP's answer is shade and positioning, not sunscreen: minimal amounts only on small areas when shade isn't possible.

Are the $9 cartoon suction-cup shades dangerous?

"Dangerous" oversells it, but they're the weakest option: modest UV coverage, and a rigid frame held by suction cups is exactly what child passenger safety technicians tell you not to hang near a car seat. If it's what you have, mount it on a window away from the child's head.

Is factory "privacy glass" enough UV protection?

No — the dark factory tint on SUV rear windows is dyed for visible light and privacy, not UVA. It looks protective while still passing a large share of UVA. Treat it as glare reduction, not sun protection.

Do windshield sunshades matter for the baby, or just the dashboard?

Both. The dashboard is the cabin's radiator: keep it 50°F+ cooler while parked and the whole car — including buckle hardware that touches infant skin — starts the drive cooler. It's the cheapest heat intervention that actually moves the numbers.
