Why Rivian is the hardest EV to thermal-protect
Three things make the R1S and R1T cabin thermally challenging in a way that's distinct from most other EVs:
- Largest glass area in production EVs. R1S has panoramic glass roof + 3 rows of side glass (driver, 2nd row, 3rd row). The R1S has a large total glass area, more than most other EVs. The R1T cab format has less glass than the R1S, but still more than comparable ICE trucks.
- Driver+ camera array. Rivian uses a stereo-camera + radar setup at the top of the windshield (driver-side) for Highway Assist + Lane Change On Demand. Universal sunshades that don't have the camera cutout cause Driver+ "Camera Obstructed" alerts — sometimes persistent until cabin air normalizes.
- EV-specific stakes. In an EV, cabin cooling draws on the battery. A cooler cabin to start with can mean less energy spent on cooling, which helps preserve range.

Large Universal Shade
Why it's the bridge option: If you need something working today, the largest universal-sized sunshades fit Rivian's windshield mechanically. A shade sized for large SUVs is close enough to Rivian's wraparound geometry for partial coverage.
Its fit around the A-pillars isn't exact, so expect some uncovered glass at the edges.
Combined Approach: Universal Windshield + Side Mesh + Roof Shade
Why this is the realistic best-now option: A single windshield shade leaves the roof and side glass exposed. Three-piece approach addresses windshield + side + roof. Mix-and-match pieces:
- Windshield: a large universal shade, or wait for Proadsy
- Side window mesh shades: vehicle-specific mesh shades for the Rivian R1S — covers 2nd row + 3rd row
- Panoramic roof shade: a roof shade made for another EV's glass roof physically fits the R1S/R1T glass roof (similar approximate dimensions)

Rivian-specific considerations
R1S vs R1T windshield
Identical glass between R1S and R1T. Same windshield pattern fits both. The cab format difference (3-row SUV vs truck cab) only matters for side-window pair sets and rear-area shades.
Adventure / Explore / Performance trims
All Rivian trims share the same windshield aperture. Trim difference (motor configuration, off-road components) doesn't affect glass.
Driver+ vs Highway Assist sensor positions
2022-2024 Rivians use Driver+ system. 2025+ added Highway Assist with extended camera array. The camera positions are slightly different — Proadsy is scanning both generations to ensure cutouts work for both systems.
Glass roof on R1S
R1S has a fixed panoramic glass roof (R1T does not — the truck has fixed metal roof). This is the largest contributor to cabin solar load on R1S. A roof shade is critical for Death Valley climate; less critical for R1T.
Off-road / overlanding use case
Rivian's Adventure trim attracts the overlanding market — owners parking at trailheads, base camps, or roof-tent setups for multi-day. Light blockout (specifically blocking morning sunrise from the rear glass) is what drives the "r1s window light block out" search query. Proadsy's pattern will include rear-quarter window shades for this use case.

Will the Proadsy windshield pattern fit both R1S and R1T?
Yes. R1S and R1T share identical windshield curvature. Same pattern. Side-window and rear-area shades will be separate SKUs (R1S 3-row vs R1T cab).
Does the panoramic glass roof on R1S require a separate shade?
Yes if you want maximum thermal protection in Phoenix / Vegas / Death Valley. The roof is a large share of the glass area on the R1S. R1T (metal roof) doesn't need this. Currently Proadsy doesn't make a Rivian roof shade — a roof shade made for another EV's glass roof fits dimensionally.
Will a shade made for another EV fit Rivian R1S/R1T?
Not cleanly. Two issues: (1) a camera cutout sized for another vehicle's camera cluster is offset from Rivian's Driver+ array and causes Driver+ "Camera Obstructed" alerts. (2) Rivian's wraparound extends further at the top corners, creating a small gap with patterns made for other vehicles.
What's the Driver+ "Camera Obstructed" alert really doing?
When the windshield shade blocks Rivian's stereo cameras (driver-side, top of glass), Driver+ disables until the cameras have unobstructed view + reach operating temperature. After removing the shade, alerts typically clear on their own after a short while. Not a safety risk, but annoying. Custom-fit patterns avoid this by clearing the camera housings.
Does a sunshade really help preserve EV range?
Cabin cooling in an EV draws on the battery, so a cooler cabin can reduce how hard the system has to work. The effect depends on climate, parking conditions and how much glass you cover. We don't publish a battery-drain figure for specific sunshade setups.
Bottom line
If you can wait for it to launch (coming soon), the Proadsy Rivian R1S/R1T pattern will be the best option — laser-scanned per Rivian, Driver+ camera cutout, 0.1mm tolerance. Waitlist signup sends a single email notification when SKU ships.
