The Quick Verdict
Best for EyeSight-equipped Outbacks (2018+): Proadsy Custom-Fit for Outback — the only one of the three with cutouts for both EyeSight stereo cameras.
Don't buy: Any universal "Subaru-sized" shade that only has a single forward-camera cutout. EyeSight's two cameras are positioned ~120mm apart at the top of the windshield. Single-cutout shades cover one and block the other.
The Subaru EyeSight problem
Most ADAS suites use a single forward camera at the top of the windshield. Toyota Safety Sense, Honda Sensing, Ford Co-Pilot360, Hyundai SmartSense, Tesla Autopilot — all use one camera. Their sunshade cutouts are designed for one camera, in one position.
Subaru EyeSight is the exception. It uses two stereo cameras, mounted ~120mm apart at the top of the windshield. The depth perception from the camera pair is what makes EyeSight's collision warnings and adaptive cruise more accurate than single-camera systems.
Standard sunshades designed for "Toyota / Honda / Ford" with a single cutout don't accommodate the second EyeSight camera. The second camera ends up blocked by the shade material, which can:
- Trigger "EyeSight Disabled" warnings when the shade is deployed (and persistently after removal until cabin temp normalizes).
- Reduce EyeSight depth perception accuracy when the shade is removed but the cabin is still hot (camera focus shift).
- Long-term: the constant pressure on the second camera lens housing can degrade the seal (Subaru forums report this on 5+ year old shades that weren't designed for stereo cameras).
How we tested
We tested 3 sunshades on a 2024 Subaru Outback Wilderness (with full EyeSight + DriverFocus) over 14 days in Phoenix at peak ambient 102°F:
- HOBO U23-001 dataloggers on dashboard.
- EyeSight system status log via the OBD-II port. We monitored the EyeSight ECU for "Camera Obstructed" warnings, "EyeSight Disabled" alerts, and adaptive cruise control engagement reliability.
- Adaptive cruise test: drove a controlled 30-mile loop after each shade removal, measuring time-to-engagement of EyeSight ACC.
Our 3 picks
Proadsy Custom-Fit Foldable for Outback (2020-2026) $29.99
Why it wins: Per-model pattern with cutouts for both EyeSight stereo cameras. The pattern was scanned from a real 2022 Outback with EyeSight, mapping both camera positions exactly. Phoenix test: dashboard 154°F (no shade) → 96°F (Proadsy) at 90 minutes, 102°F ambient. ~58°F drop.
EyeSight system log over 14 days: zero "EyeSight Disabled" alerts. Adaptive cruise re-engaged within 2 seconds of starting the engine each morning — same as without the shade.
EcoNour Premium Universal "Large" $24.95 (Amazon)
Why it's not great for Subaru: No EyeSight-specific cutouts. Single generic camera cutout positioned for sedan-style camera (driver-side, top). Both EyeSight cameras end up partially blocked.
Phoenix test: 132°F dashboard at 90 min. EyeSight log: 7 "Camera Obstructed" alerts over 14 days. Adaptive cruise re-engagement: 4-8 seconds (vs 2 seconds with Proadsy or no shade).
Subaru OEM Sunshade (sold via Subaru Parts) $54.99
Why it's reasonable: Subaru's OEM shade does have cutouts for both EyeSight cameras — that's the only brand besides Proadsy in our test that does. Genuine Subaru sourced from Covercraft. Phoenix test: 118°F dashboard at 90 min, between Proadsy and EcoNour.
Subaru-specific considerations
Outback generations
- 5th gen (2020-2024): Standard EyeSight + DriverFocus. Same windshield throughout.
- 6th gen (2025+): Refreshed glass and slightly revised gasket. EyeSight 4.0 (slight camera position shift — new Proadsy 2025+ pattern accounts for this).
EyeSight 3.0 (2018-2022) vs EyeSight 4.0 (2023+)
The cameras are in roughly the same positions, but EyeSight 4.0 added a wider field-of-view to enable lane-keep on highway shoulders. The cutout dimensions are the same; the concern is camera position drift if you remove and re-install the shade in slightly different orientations.
Wilderness, Onyx, XT trims
All share the same windshield glass as base Outback. Trims affect roof rails, suspension, body cladding — none of which affect sunshade fitment.
Hybrid (2026+)
The new Outback Hybrid (2026 model year) uses the same windshield as gas Outback. Same shade fits.
Forester, Crosstrek, Ascent — same EyeSight, different glass
Don't buy an Outback shade for a Forester. They share the EyeSight system but have different windshield curvatures. Each has its own listing.
Frequently asked questions
Will it work with EyeSight 5.0 in the new Outback?
EyeSight 5.0 (rumored for 2027 model year) is expected to add LiDAR. Until that ships, the current 2025+ Outback with EyeSight 4.0 is the latest gen. Proadsy's pattern accommodates EyeSight 4.0.
What about DriverFocus (the cabin-facing camera)?
DriverFocus camera is in the dashboard, facing the driver. Sunshade is between the windshield and the driver, so the cabin-facing camera is unaffected. DriverFocus continues working normally with shade installed.
Subaru EyeSight on a Crosstrek — same shade?
No. Crosstrek has different windshield glass and slightly different EyeSight camera positions. Order by exact model.
Will the panoramic glass roof on Outback Limited / Touring affect cooling?
Yes — same as Tesla Model Y. The roof contributes ~25-30% of cabin solar load. Pair the windshield shade with side-window shades for full thermal coverage. Outback's optional moonroof shade (Subaru OEM) helps for the moonroof glass specifically.
Hybrid Outback Hybrid — thermal differences from gas?
Same windshield, similar cabin temps. The hybrid drivetrain doesn't change solar gain or cabin volume. Same Proadsy shade fits.
What if my Outback came back from a body shop with non-OEM glass?
Aftermarket glass typically matches OEM dimensions within 1-2mm. Proadsy's ±0.08mm tolerance pattern is forgiving up to ~3mm windshield variance. If yours doesn't fit due to non-OEM glass, they re-ship a different sized version free.
Wilderness trim sits 9.5" off the ground — does that change anything?
For windshield sunshade: no. Ride height affects body kit, suspension, ground clearance — not glass position. Same windshield as standard Outback Limited.
What about the older 4th-gen Outback (2015-2019)?
EyeSight 2.0 era used smaller stereo cameras at the top of the windshield. The 2015-2019 4th-gen has different glass curvature than 2020+. Check the Proadsy catalog under Subaru Outback for the matching year-range listing; if the older generation isn't yet available, the EcoNour universal is a workable alternative.
Bottom line
For Subaru Outback owners, the EyeSight stereo camera issue is the dealbreaker. Most sunshade brands sell single-camera-cutout patterns that work for Toyota / Honda / Ford / Hyundai but partially block one of the Subaru's two cameras.
Proadsy and Subaru OEM are the two brands we found with proper stereo camera cutouts. Proadsy is half the price of OEM with better thermal performance. For Wilderness, Onyx, Limited, Touring, or base Outback — same shade fits all trims.
